by HotspotSome people go to therapy offices. Some sit in cafés and talk through their worries.I went to Mount Mogle — and somehow came back lighter. They say hiking is cheaper therapy, but after this day, I’m convinced it might be the most powerful kind. The Call of the Trail The morning started early, the air crisp and full of promise. Backpacks were tightened, water bottles clinked, and laughter drifted through the parking lot as members of the Ethiopian hiking community greeted one another like long-lost friends. Some had met dozens of times on trails before; others — like me — were there for the first time, unsure what to expect but already feeling welcomed. Mount Mogle rose ahead of us, calm and confident, its slopes glowing under the soft Ethiopian sun. From the bottom, it didn’t look intimidating — just inviting. The kind of mountain that says, Come see what I’m hiding at the top. Step by Step, Stress by Stress We began walking. At first, conversations flowed easily: jobs, family, weekend plans, jokes about who brought too many snacks and who forgot sunscreen. But as the path grew steeper, the chatter softened into rhythmic breathing and the crunch of boots on dirt. Something strange happened along the way. The noise in my head — deadlines, emails, unfinished tasks — slowly faded. Each step demanded just enough attention to keep my mind present. Watch your footing. Breathe. Drink water. Look up. And when I did look up? Wow. Rolling hills stretched endlessly, dotted with trees and patches of farmland. Birds circled above us, riding invisible currents. The wind brushed past like a quiet encouragement: You’re doing great. Keep going. Strangers Who Feel Like Teammates One of the most beautiful parts of hiking with a community is realizing how quickly strangers become teammates. Someone offered me a walking stick when my legs started to protest. Another hiker cracked jokes during a tough incline. A woman behind me kept saying, “Slow is still moving,” and somehow that simple sentence felt like wisdom meant for life, not just the trail. No one was racing. No one was left behind. We paused often — for water, for photos, for people to catch their breath, for moments when the view demanded silence. In those pauses, friendships formed in the easiest way possible: without effort, without pressure, just shared sweat and shared wonder. Why I’ll Be Back As we reached the bottom, dusty and satisfied, people exchanged contacts, promised to meet on the next trail, and debated which mountain should come next. I stood there for a moment longer, looking back at the peak we had conquered together. Cheaper therapy? Absolutely. Better than therapy? Some days… maybe. Because on Mount Mogle, with the Ethiopian hiking community beside me, I didn’t just hike a mountain. I hiked away from stress.Toward clarity.Toward connection. And I already know: The trail is calling again. 🥾⛰️ Source: Ethio Hiking Group TG

by HotspotNestled in the heart of Ethiopia, Lalibela is a mesmerizing town renowned for its extraordinary rock-hewn churches. A UNESCO World Heritage site, it stands as a testament to medieval Ethiopia's profound religious devotion and architectural ingenuity. The eleven monolithic churches, carved directly out of living rock, are not constructed but excavated downwards into the earth. The most famous among them is Bete Giyorgis (Church of St. George), a cruciform structure perfectly symmetrical and standing in a deep pit. Legend attributes these marvels to King Lalibela, who, in the 12th century, sought to create a "New Jerusalem" after Muslim conquests halted Christian pilgrimages to the Holy Land. Each church possesses unique characteristics, from the intricate facades of Bete Medhane Alem (House of the Redeemer) to the complex tunnels connecting several structures. These sacred spaces are still active places of worship, echoing with the chants of priests and the prayers of pilgrims, especially during major religious festivals. Visiting Lalibela offers a profound spiritual and historical journey, immersing visitors in a living piece of ancient Christian heritage.
by GemechisI honestly didn’t expect it to be this good. Pulled up just as the sun was going down, and the whole place was already glowing — fairy lights everywhere, people spread out on chairs and blankets, soft music in the background. Addis at night has a vibe, but this? Next level. As the screen lit up, the city noise faded away. Cool breeze, open sky, stars above, movie in front of you. No walls, no rush — just people laughing, reacting together, sharing snacks, taking photos, living the moment. There’s something special about watching a movie outdoors in Addis. Strangers feel like friends, the atmosphere is warm, and it doesn’t feel like “just a cinema” — it feels like an experience. 🎥 If you’re tired of the usual weekend plans and want something different, creative, and honestly beautiful — Addis Open Air Cinema is a must. Definitely coming back. Add this to your weekend bucket list. 🌌🍿

High on the dramatic, rugged cliffs of the Tigray region in northern Ethiopia stands one of the most extraordinary spiritual landscapes in the world: the Gheralta rock-hewn churches. Carved from ancient sandstone by unknown artisans centuries ago, these remarkable sanctuaries are more than architectural wonders — they are living centers of faith where monks pursue a life of prayer, simplicity, and devotion. A Place Carved by Faith Gheralta’s churches blend seamlessly with the jagged geology of the plateau, appearing as if they grew out of the very rock itself. Many of these sanctuaries are tucked away in crevices or perched atop narrow spines of stone, reachable only by steep climbs or narrow ledges. Despite the physical challenge, these sacred places attract monks and pilgrims who see them as portals to deeper communion with God. For the monks who call this region home, the landscape is not a barrier but a bridge — a terrain that fosters humility, perseverance, and intimacy with the divine. Life of Prayer and Purpose Every day in the lives of the Gheralta monks is centered on a rhythm of prayer and contemplation. Long before sunrise — often by the glow of candlelight alone — monks gather in the ancient rock chambers to chant Psalms and recite prayers in Ge’ez, the liturgical language of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church. Guardians of Ancient Tradition The monks of Gheralta are custodians of traditions that stretch back over a millennium. They maintain liturgical practices, preserve ancient manuscripts, and guard sacred relics. Their chants — resonant and otherworldly — are passed down through generations and represent a living connection to the earliest forms of Christian worship in Africa. Daily Life Carved in Rhythm Monastic life here is tempered by the rhythms of nature and the contours of the land: Work: Monks engage in practical labor — tending gardens, repairing ancient structures, gathering water, and preparing simple meals. Silence: At many points in the day, silence prevails. This sacred quiet allows for reflection and openness to spiritual insight. Contemplation: Contemplative time is woven throughout the day, providing space for meditation on scripture and personal prayer. Why Their Story Matters In an age where many seek fulfillment through speed, comfort, or consumption, the monastic life in Gheralta stands as a powerful counter-narrative: that fulfillment can also come from surrender, stillness, perseverance, and devotion. The monks’ ability to transcend hardship by anchoring themselves in prayer and community offers a lesson in resilience and hope — one carved as enduringly as the stone sanctuaries they inhabit. by JoIn the heart of Addis Ababa, atop the shimmering glass needle of the Commercial Bank of Ethiopia (CBE) Headquarters, a culinary homecoming has reached new heights. Chef Marcus Samuelsson—the man who cooked for the Obamas and revitalized Harlem’s food scene—has returned to his birthplace to open Marcus Addis. Located on the 47th floor of East Africa’s tallest building, the restaurant is more than just a place to eat; it is a full-circle moment for a chef whose life has spanned continents. The Vision: Born in Ethiopia, Inspired by the World Samuelsson’s story is legendary: born in Ethiopia, adopted and raised in Sweden, and eventually becoming a global icon in New York City. At Marcus Addis, these three worlds collide. The restaurant’s philosophy is a "fusion with an Ethiopian twist," moving beyond traditional expectations of what Ethiopian food should be. "This is a homecoming for me," Samuelsson says. "My culinary journey has always been influenced by my family roots here, and Marcus Addis celebrates that heritage in every detail." More Than a View While the 360-degree panoramic view of the capital is breathtaking, the interior is equally intentional. The space acts as a living gallery, featuring a rotating selection of contemporary Ethiopian art in partnership with the Addis Fine Art Gallery. But the real impact lies in the "vehicle to teach." Samuelsson has partnered with local culinary schools and the Hyatt Regency to turn the restaurant into a training hub. By hiring and mentoring young Ethiopian talent, he is helping to professionalize the local hospitality industry and create a global bridge for future chefs. Image Credits: @aronisme (instagram)
