Hiking Is Cheaper Therapy: An Epic Day at Mount Mogle with the Ethiopian Hiking Community

Some people go to therapy offices. Some sit in cafés and talk through their worries.I went to Mount Mogle — and somehow came back lighter. They say hiking is cheaper therapy, but after this day, I’m convinced it might be the most powerful kind. The Call of the Trail The morning started early, the air crisp and full of promise. Backpacks were tightened, water bottles clinked, and laughter drifted through the parking lot as members of the Ethiopian hiking community greeted one another like long-lost friends. Some had met dozens of times on trails before; others — like me — were there for the first time, unsure what to expect but already feeling welcomed. Mount Mogle rose ahead of us, calm and confident, its slopes glowing under the soft Ethiopian sun. From the bottom, it didn’t look intimidating — just inviting. The kind of mountain that says, Come see what I’m hiding at the top. Step by Step, Stress by Stress We began walking. At first, conversations flowed easily: jobs, family, weekend plans, jokes about who brought too many snacks and who forgot sunscreen. But as the path grew steeper, the chatter softened into rhythmic breathing and the crunch of boots on dirt. Something strange happened along the way. The noise in my head — deadlines, emails, unfinished tasks — slowly faded. Each step demanded just enough attention to keep my mind present. Watch your footing. Breathe. Drink water. Look up. And when I did look up? Wow. Rolling hills stretched endlessly, dotted with trees and patches of farmland. Birds circled above us, riding invisible currents. The wind brushed past like a quiet encouragement: You’re doing great. Keep going. Strangers Who Feel Like Teammates One of the most beautiful parts of hiking with a community is realizing how quickly strangers become teammates. Someone offered me a walking stick when my legs started to protest. Another hiker cracked jokes during a tough incline. A woman behind me kept saying, “Slow is still moving,” and somehow that simple sentence felt like wisdom meant for life, not just the trail. No one was racing. No one was left behind. We paused often — for water, for photos, for people to catch their breath, for moments when the view demanded silence. In those pauses, friendships formed in the easiest way possible: without effort, without pressure, just shared sweat and shared wonder. Why I’ll Be Back As we reached the bottom, dusty and satisfied, people exchanged contacts, promised to meet on the next trail, and debated which mountain should come next. I stood there for a moment longer, looking back at the peak we had conquered together. Cheaper therapy? Absolutely. Better than therapy? Some days… maybe. Because on Mount Mogle, with the Ethiopian hiking community beside me, I didn’t just hike a mountain. I hiked away from stress.Toward clarity.Toward connection. And I already know: The trail is calling again. 🥾⛰️ Source: Ethio Hiking Group TG
